Twitter i
s expected to begin a new beta test that will allow users to make phone calls.

Jajah is a VoIP application that will allow users to place phone calls using their Twitter account. The only catch is that you have to sign up for a Jahjah account as well which is just signing up.

According to Fast Company, the integration into Twitter seems easy.

"You simply Tweet with a message starting "@call" followed by the @username of the person you're trying to contact. Jajah's own system intercepts the message, and will then activate a person-to-person telephone call using its VoIP service."

The cost is free for up to two minutes.

I think this is an awesome addition to spreading the social networking options. How cool is it to be able to talk straight to that inventor who is selling his latest product. Or if you have questions of the pastor, asking him to call is simple.

Twitter will now be a center of media crossing live voice with text to bring people together at no cost. You do not even have to share phone numbers, but instead will be able to come together, at least for the two minutes.

Imagine the family time! Or really getting to know the orphan you sponsor overseas. This is exciting time in technology. I think Twitter may move ahead of Facebook with this move in truly bringing the world together by using one media.

Interesting article! I don't think a 2 minute free call is very competitive though - Skype already offers unlimited free computer-to-computer calls, and has a browser add-on that puts an icon next to your contacts names on any web page their name happens to appear on, allowing you to call them with a couple of clicks.

The tighter integration with Twitter is a good selling point, but 2 minutes free (and presumably you pay after that) is quite miserly - a 2 minute call to someone you've not talked to before is likely to be 90% introductions :)
