Goodbye Microsoft? Google Announces New Operating System

Google continues to make it clear that they want Microsoft out of the picture. The latest announcement by Google could do just that.

Google has announced a new operating system known as Google Chrome Operating System. It is an extension on Google's browser that was launched nine months ago and already has 30 million people using it. Can you hear the rejoicing as people say goodbye to windows?

"The operating systems that browsers run on were designed in an era where there was no web." Google says on its company blog. "So today, we're announcing a new project that's a natural extension of Google Chrome - the Google Chrome Operating System. It's our attempt to re-think what operating systems should be."

Google will initially release the program on netbooks, but plans on attacking the PC market eventually. The operating system is designed so that users can get online in a matter of seconds as opposed to the traditional operating systems.

The best part with this new operating system is that Google is taking away the main issue with Microsoft's operating systems. Viruses.

"And as we did for the Google Chrome browser, we are going back to the basics and completely redesigning the underlying security architecture of the OS so that users don't have to deal with viruses, malware and security updates," Google promises. "It should just work."

Should Apple be worried as well?

I am excited to see what this does to Microsoft. Competition always benefits the consumer. Google doesn't seem to be satisfied with riding out its success in search, but continues to strive for more.

If Google's past success is any indication, Microsoft needs to do more then what they have done in the past. Google is a real threat that could finally put an end to the reign of Microsoft.

What are your thoughts? Does Google have the chance to dethrone Microsoft? Which company do you trust more? Are you willing to give up Windows for a new operating system? I would love to hear your thoughts.

In an unrelated note, Google also announced the end of the Beta tag on many of its applications including Gmail. Gmail have finally all grown up, sorry to quote Swingers.

Google Calendars, Google Talk and Google Docs are all out of Beta.
